Citicoline in Oral Pouches
Citicoline is one of the few nootropics a pouch can carry at a meaningful share of a studied dose, and the brands using it disclose every milligram. This guide covers forms, dose math, moisture handling, testing, and a US regulatory status that is less settled than most spec sheets suggest.
What citicoline is
Citicoline, also called CDP-choline, is a nucleotide compound. Taken orally, it is broken down in the gut into choline and cytidine, which are absorbed and then resynthesized in the liver. It is sold in two main forms: citicoline sodium, the common form and the one used as a drug, and a free-acid form. Cognizin, marketed by Kyowa Hakko, is a branded citicoline its supplier describes as a free-base fermentation product. The sodium salt is about 4 percent heavier per mole, so a label claim must state which basis it uses.
Why brands put citicoline in a pouch
Because the dose math works better than it does for most nootropics. Commonly cited nootropic intake is 250 to 500 mg per day. PouchMade's standard pouch is 0.6g, with 0.5g and 0.7g formats available, and a typical actives budget of 250 to 280 mg, about 300 mg at most. A 250 mg citicoline dose would use 89 to 100 percent of that typical budget (250 divided by 280 or 250), leaving little or no room for caffeine. At 100 to 150 mg per pouch, citicoline takes about 36 to 60 percent of the budget, leaving about 100 to 180 mg for caffeine and any other active, and two pouches at 125 mg reach 250 mg, the low end of the daily range.
Be precise about delivery. Citicoline's bioavailability comes from the gut and liver, not intact absorption through the mouth, and no buccal study exists. Saliva carries it down and it is swallowed, so the pouch is a convenient, discreet dosing format, not a faster route. A product designed to be spit out rather than swallowed has no evidence basis for the studied benefit.
Industry-typical dose ranges
In a PouchMade review of about 36 non-nicotine pouch formulas on major US marketplaces in September 2026, 3 used citicoline, and all 3 disclosed an exact dose: 63.5 to 125 mg per pouch. Every product using it stated the dose, which set it apart from the other nootropic actives in the review, most of which were named far more often than they were dosed. All 3 paired it with caffeine and nothing else, a deliberately minimal two-active formula that reads as the clean, clinical lane of the category. With three data points and a 2x spread, there is no settled market norm yet.
| Reference point | Amount |

| Supplier self-affirmed GRAS, conventional foods | 250 mg per serving |
| 12-week trial in 100 healthy adults aged 50-85 | 500 mg/day |
| Disclosed pouch doses, September 2026 | 63.5-125 mg per pouch |
Formulation: taste and mouthfeel
The taste evidence conflicts. Supplier marketing calls citicoline neutral, while taste-masking literature lists citicoline sodium among compounds formulators find need masking, and no peer-reviewed sensory panel exists. The working assumption is a salty, mineral, or savory off-note at nootropic doses of 250 mg and up. Masking options, in order of likely feasibility: microencapsulation or spray coating, which doubles as a moisture barrier; ion-exchange resin, mechanistically plausible but untested on citicoline; and flavor and sweetener layering as a supplement to either. Cyclodextrin ranks low, because it works on lipophilic bitter molecules and citicoline is a fully water-soluble charged molecule. All of these are hypotheses to confirm at the bench.
Moisture is the bigger handling risk. Citicoline sodium takes up water to about 12 to 13 percent by weight across roughly 40 to 85 percent relative humidity and deliquesces above about 85 percent; the patent literature describes tablets swelling and cracking and calls for low-humidity processing and moisture-barrier packaging. Blend below about 40 percent RH. Pairing citicoline with alpha-GPC puts two hygroscopic actives in one pouch.
Quality and testing
Every batch needs an identity test under 21 CFR 111.75(a)(1); a supplier CoA does not substitute. The working method set:
- Identity by IR plus HPLC retention time against a reference standard
- Assay by HPLC-UV at 271 nm, reported on the stated salt or free-acid basis
- Related substances: cytidine, CMP, choline, and uridine
- Water content, since uptake changes the effective assay
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury by ICP-MS under USP <2232>, plus microbial counts under USP <2021> to <2023>
Whether a USP monograph applies to supplement-grade citicoline is unconfirmed, so cite the supplier's actual method. On the finished product, citicoline is an added ingredient and must hold at least 100 percent of label claim through shelf life; for a hygroscopic active, any overage should be justified with stability data.
Regulatory notes
Citicoline's US position is less settled than its popularity suggests. It is a post-DSHEA ingredient with no posted new dietary ingredient notification and no FDA GRAS notice. Its supplier announced self-affirmed GRAS in 2009 for food use at 250 mg per serving, and self-affirmed GRAS is not an NDI notification. Citicoline is also an approved prescription drug in several countries, and whether that creates a drug-preclusion issue in the US is an open legal question for counsel. The EFSA 500 mg per day figure is an EU position, not a US ceiling. Citicoline is not on the Proposition 65 list and carries no ingredient-specific Amazon restriction. Claims stay structure/function, such as "supports focus," with the DSHEA disclaimer.
Where citicoline fits at PouchMade
Citicoline suits a nootropic pouch and pairs naturally with caffeine in an energy pouch, where PouchMade formulates caffeine from 0 to 200 mg per pouch. Humidity control, masking, and the dose split between actives and flavor are worked out through custom formulation at the FDA-registered, GMP-certified Dallas facility. For how a focus stack compares, see the L-tyrosine guide.
Q01How much citicoline can fit in an oral pouch?
A pouch typically has room for 250 to 280 mg of actives, about 300 mg at most, in a 0.6g standard fill. A 250 mg dose would use nearly all of that, so formulas that add caffeine land lower. Disclosed products in a September 2026 review carried 63.5 to 125 mg.
Q02Is Cognizin the same as citicoline?
Cognizin is a branded citicoline marketed by Kyowa Hakko, described by its supplier as a free-base form. Generic citicoline is usually the sodium salt, which is about 4 percent heavier per mole, so the label basis matters.
Q03Does citicoline absorb through the mouth in a pouch?
There is no evidence that it does. Citicoline is broken down in the gut and resynthesized in the liver, and no buccal study exists. In a pouch it is carried by saliva and swallowed.
Q04Is citicoline legal in US dietary supplements?
It is widely sold, but its status rests on self-affirmed GRAS and marketing history rather than an FDA-reviewed NDI notification, and its prescription-drug status abroad raises a question counsel should review.
